Why a mouse study is not a human result

A great deal of supplement marketing rests on animal studies presented as though they were human findings.

What animal studies are for

They let researchers test ideas that would be impractical or unethical in people: controlled genetics, controlled diet, whole-lifespan timeframes, tissue examination. They are genuinely valuable — as a way of deciding what to investigate next.

Why results do not transfer cleanly

Metabolism differs between species. Doses used in animal work are often far higher, relative to body weight, than anything a person would take. Lab animals are genetically uniform and live in controlled conditions; people are neither.

The attrition rate is well known: most interventions that work in mice do not go on to show the same effect in human trials.

Cell studies are a further step removed

Adding a compound directly to cells in a dish bypasses digestion, metabolism, and distribution around a body. It answers a mechanistic question, not a practical one.

The test to apply

When you see a claim, ask what it was demonstrated in. If the answer is mice, or cells, the honest phrasing is "this is being investigated", not "this works".
